I believe you will want to meet my colleague Ivan. I remember the first time we met: it was at the time he was working as a guide at the Botanic garden. I was fascinated not only by his great botanical knowledge, but also by the way he took us to a whole new world. It was as if the plants were telling us their own amazing stories.
Since then we are not only colleagues, but friends as well. I will let him take you on a tour through his town and his world. Most of the photos that you can see in this text were taken with his camera and given a personal touch by our host. Enjoy!
Maybe it is not the latest one. Maybe it’s not the biggest one. But it is a Hero. And most interesting of all, you can visit it. The museum exhibit, the Yugoslav submarine in luxurious marina Porto Montenegro, is as much as 50 meters long!
re you the type of tourist who likes to follow well-known routes, or are you Indiana Jones type always seeking out adventure and excitement? Do you like to explore places far from city noise? These places are usually remote, but the fact that the nature there is intact, peaceful and silent is exactly what makes them outstanding.
What is Bar? Bar isn’t only a town; Bar is so many things – perfect combination of rich nature and men’s hardworking hands which added to the beauty of nature. They say that sunsets are the most beautiful in this part of Montenegro, because of the way the unusual green color of olive leaves reflects the sun rays.
Musical ear of a contemporary man, even that born in Montenegro, is not accustomed to the sharp, the dramatic sound of our national instrument. Perhaps because the times are not as dramatic as they used to be? Or even because of a variety of instruments we have today that produce more melodic and pleasant sounds?
But for every Montenegrin, gusle remain to be a sacred instrument. It’s no coincidence that its sales price is so high: Gusle is not a wall decoration, or a souvenir, and it should never become that. Nonetheless, gusle kept our history from oblivion till the appearance of those who replaced the oral tradition with a written word.
“It’s been a long time, but I still remember it well…” an old olive tree begins its story,”when there was not so many people around me, not so many curious tourists, only a hardworking hand here and there, one of which gave me life…”
“I’ve been told you are 2,240 years old. Is that right?”I ask.
“Well, ladies are not to be asked about their age, especially when they’re as old as I am. But let’s say it’s true. I think some Greek planted me, I would say so by the sound of his name. It was a long time ago. I remember a lot, but I have also forgotten a lot.”
“You said well, you remember all the ups and downs of this region, all the touching stories … Can you share some of them with me?”
As if it has always been waiting for her. Rumija, the southernmost mountain with one of the most magnificant viewpoints is now a personal trainer of a brave girl from Bar, Carolina Ilich. New times and new occupations, even for the mountain. And it adjusts. It wants to be a part of one great story about conquering mountain tops.
So large to have an appearance of a sea, so different that it might be called unique and so beautiful that eyes can’t get enough of it! Skadar Lake always calms me down, fills me with positive energy and reminds me that I don’t need to die to be in a heavenly place…
Once upon a time there was a tribe called Paštrovići, living on the most beautiful place on Earth. Even Sun couldn’t wait to see the beauty of the place every morning. It would appeared early, giving people possibility to enjoy this beauty in its full glow and set as late as it could, sad for leaving, but with the promise of a new day and another joyful sight. But, Paštrovići couldn’t enjoy it just like that; there was a price they had to pay. Everyone wanted this small piece of paradise for themselves. Mighty armies came from distant countries, threatening to disturb a peaceful life of local people.
